Preparing For iOS 11’s Launch

| July 7, 2017

With the recent launch of iOS 11 beta and the full launch of iOS 11 on the horizon, app developers should be prepared for significant changes. The app store has been transformed and many new app capabilities have been added. Here at Blue Label Labs we have already begun assisting our clients to prepare for these upcoming changes and can alleviate any confusion you may have.  Blue Label Labs is well equipped to optimize apps in order to take advantage of the new features.

App Store Optimization changes in iOS 11

App Store Optimization (ASO) has been transformed with the new App store re-design. This video from Steve Young, founder of the App marketing blog AppMasters, provides the biggest ASO changes that will come with iOS 11.

Summary of the changes mentioned in the video:

  • Character limit for app names has been reduced from 50 characters to 30 characters
  • Ability to add subtitle line to app name, subtitle is indexed (searchable)
  • New promotional text field added to description
  • Search result changes; new product page, in-app purchases featured, overall reviews (not just latest app version reviews)
  • In-app purchases fully indexed (searchable)
  • Easier to review apps, one click instead of three clicks, ability to review app within the app

App changes in iOS 11

Many new features have been added with iOS 11, with the most exciting feature being the release of ARkit. ARkit is a new framework that offers an added platform for augmented reality features. Features include positional tracking and scene understanding, which will transform gaming apps such as Pokemon Go. This also has ramifications outside of gaming apps and can enhance entertainment, construction, and manufacturing apps as well.

Additionally, developers will have access to a new “Core NFC” framework that allows apps to read Near Field Communication (NFC) tags. According to Apple, this lets developers create apps that can read tags to “give users more information about their physical environment and the real-world objects in it.” Specific examples include apps that can provide information about items in a store, or exhibits in a museum.

Another new feature is the launch of Core ML, which is Apple’s program for machine learning. While iOS 10 had machine learning, Core ML’s addition in iOS 11 has extended its functionality. This allows many new features that are available to be incorporated into apps. Features include; face and object tracking, image registration, and barcode detection.

The Siri kit is expanding as well with the iOS release. The  SiriKit API allows developers to add Siri integration into more apps than ever before. SiriKit was previously limited to ride scheduling, banking, messaging, photo search, VoIP calling, and car controls, but it has expanded to encompass bill paying, task management, and QR codes in iOS 11.

iOS 11 app apocalypse?

With iOS 11’s release, many old apps will become obsolete and will be deleted from the app store. Apple has announced that all apps which use a 32-bit processor will be deleted and that only 64-bit apps will remain on the app store. While most new apps use 64-bit processors over 200,000 apps remain on 32-bit processors. Developers need to make sure that their apps are running on the correct processors.
