Voice Recognition Interface: Amazon vs. Google

Bobby Gill | August 28, 2018

Voice recognition software has paved the way for apps that users can interface with simply by talking to a virtual assistant. However, if you have an idea for an application that leverages voice recognition technology, you need to choose which of the main two voice interfaces to develop it for: Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.

Neither option is objectively “better” than another. Each voice interface offers its own unique benefits. If you’re not sure which is right for your goals, keep these key points in mind.

Available Voice Interface Units

Many Google voice apps are also compatible with Android phones. This is not the case with Alexa apps. Thus, creating a Google voice app gives you the opportunity to reach a wider range of  potential customers.

On the other hand, Amazon currently dominates the voice recognition technology market with Alexa skills and other features. It boasts an approximately 70% market share of smart speakers. That means Google is still trying to catch up; the tech giant may not ever reach that goal.

Competition in Voice Recognition Technology Apps

There are currently more than 30,000 Alexa skills available. This creates a lot of competition when using Alexa marketing in your strategy. It can be difficult to get noticed with so many other products on the market. However, many users feel these skills are low quality, so are skeptical to trust voice recognition software on the platform.

Google, on the other hand, has not allowed inexperienced developers to create and release apps for its devices. Customers may get a better impression from a an app using the Google voice interface right off the bat if Alexa skills continue to develop an overall negative reputation.

Ease of Entry With Alexa Skills

The abundance of low quality Alexa products is partially a result of Amazon’s strategy. Amazon provides a lot of resources to help developers create skills for the Alexa voice interface. While that does mean poor skills slip through the cracks, it also makes it easier for developers to get started on projects with this voice recognition software. That’s why Alexa marketing is extremely popular among many big-name brands.

Voice Recognition Software Goals

Are you selling a product that’s available on Amazon? If so, developing an Alexa skill in conjunction with an Alexa marketing strategy may be the better option for you. That’s because Amazon lets users purchase items straight through Alexa.

That said, experts agree that Google Assistant is better at comprehending natural human language. Developing an app for this voice interface could be the better option if you’re focusing less on selling an item and more on creating a product with voice recognition technology that works reliably and consistently.

Again, there is no single voice interface that’s ideal for everyone’s needs. The points here will help you make a decision for your future voice recognition technology project. Whichever you choose, be sure to coordinate with experienced developers who can leverage this technology to its full potential.
