Behind The Apps: Cory Bishop

Bobby Gill | October 22, 2016

Cory Bishop of Blue Label Labs

[Editor’s Note: You may not know it, but there’s an incredible team of really cool, very awesome, entrepreneurial-driven creators, technologists, developers and visionaries behind the apps that get created here at Blue Label Labs. As a part of an on-going installment, we will be periodically featuring some of the exceptional talent beyond the #Slack channels of Blue Label Labs team.]

Cory Bishop is a Program Manager at Blue Label Labs. He joined Blue Label Labs in 2015. Cory is also the co-founder of ShopDrop (an app that let’s you discover sample sales around fashion capitals of the world) and MyCallSheets (a website that help photo and film producers create, send and track callsheets). We asked Cory a few questions about his time at Blue Label Labs, how he got into the mobile industry and got a peek into some of his most used apps.

When and how did you get started in the mobile app development space or mobile industry?

I got started in the mobile app development space when I was in college at Bucknell University. I won 3rd place in a business competition with an app prototype.

What brought you to Blue Label Labs?

I used to work for a Blue Label Labs partner. It was through this that I got to meet the Blue Label Lab co-founders Jordan and Bobby. I really loved their experience, their mission, and overall team synergy. I ended up doing part time design and Program Management (PM) work for the team until I transitioned into a full time PM.

What tip would you give any startup or brand wanting to create an app from scratch?

Validate the idea before you invest significant time & money into it. Make a prototype, or even just a simple mockup and then get it in front of real people. I think this is the one step that many startups and companies do the least – validation is important. Do user feedback rounds early, it’ll give you the insights that you need to either pursue the app or pivot or do something new altogether.

Who do you think is going to dominate the Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality landscape?

I think it’s way too early to say but due to Apple and Google’s dominance of their respective app stores, they clearly have an advantage in leveraging their existing user base.

What do you think about Google’s release of their Allo Messaging app?

Yes, messaging as a platform has finally matured, but I think Google’s a bit too late. They’re going to struggle to catch up to Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, WeChat and the current incumbents.

What 3 apps on your phone do you use the most?

Pocket (awesome for saving articles to read later), Wunderlist (keeps my daily tasks organized), and Slack for keeping up with the Blue Label Labs team and projects (of course!).

Lastly, how many apps do you currently have downloaded on your phone in total?

Just checked and it’s something like 200+ haha WOW. But hey I’m a PM at BLL, testing and observing other apps all day is part of the job!
